The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women have their first gynecological visit between the ages of 13 and 15, or when they become sexually active, whichever comes first. This initial visit may include a discussion about their cycles and menstrual symptoms, sexual health, birth control options, and if needed a physical examination.
A pap smear is a test that checks for abnormal cells in the cervix, which can sometimes be a sign of cervical cancer. The frequency of pap smears depends on a woman's age and medical history. In general, women between the ages of 21 and 29 should have a pap smear every three years. Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a pap smear every three to five years, depending on their HPV status and other factors.
